Go back to MasterBath

May 22, 2005

This weekend, I devoted a good portion of my time to the MasterBath. First, Dan and Michelle loaned us their station wagon so we could pick up our new doors from Minton's, in downtown Mtn View. The annual Mtn View Art and Wine Festival happened to fall on this weekend, so we had to very carefully thread our way through lots of traffic and drunk art patrons pushing baby strollers.

Behold our brand-new old-fashioned 5-panel doors with rubbed-brass hinges. I'm not going to say how much they cost, because that would spoil the next part of my story. We did notice that they don't seem to fit the door openings (they're just a little too big), and I can't wait to see what happens.

Secondly, for the past several days I have been trying to wrap by brain around the logistics of TrimAndMolding. After staring at doors and windows for a while, I put together a spreadsheet which enumerated the various types of TrimAndMolding we needed, as well as the required lengths and delivery schedules. It was a nightmare. This morning, Tracy double-checked my work, and then we drove down to Southern Lumber in San Jose, also known as The Wonderful World of Wood. We spent the next three hours wandering around a vast warehouse of lumber, picking out twenty different types of planks, strips, stops, boards, etc. It felt like a lot longer. We also had Southern Lumber mill several pieces (we asked them to rip 1x6 boards to get 1x4.5). I was pretty impressed with the staff at Southern Lumber; they really know their lumber, and they are friendly and efficient.

When we were done, we had picked out the TrimAndMolding for:

Doesn't seem like much, right? And this is mostly plebian pine, mind you-- not diamond-studded African diddlewood.

The final bill, including the delivery fee, was $858.44.

Here is the TrimAndMolding that fit in my Honda. The rest will be delivered on Tuesday, /Day21. Or so they claim.

I carefully labelled each and every piece of wood to indicate where it should be used.
