The Big Remodel
We're going to remodel our master bathroom. Tracy has always hated the MasterBath. I didn't mind it at first; yes, the tiles were falling out of the wall and the grout grew mildew and nothing was built to code, but it didn't bother me that much. I've seen worse.
But then a year ago, the toilet stopcock broke and I couldn't remove it because there wasn't enough clearance around the toilet. I spent an hour or two trying to feel my way behind the toilet, with my arms wrapped around the tank and my head down in the bowl. As I crouched there with my head in the recesses of the toilet, a deep rage grew inside me (along with a greater respect for building codes). I emerged a changed man. In the end, I practically had to disassemble the entire toilet--just to replace a valve.
Afterwards, I wanted to replace the MasterBath as badly as Tracy.
Subsequently, Tracy spent about a million hours designing our new bathroom and closet. We wanted bigger bathroom, bigger closet, lots of light, and styling to match the rest of the house. After calling 20 contractors to solicit bids, about 5 contractors returned our calls, and 3 actually came on the day they said they would. We received 3 bids, 2 of which made us laugh out loud and ask What are they thinking?!
In the end, we had little trouble deciding which builder to hire because there was really no choice.

Tile
|
We wasted a whole lotta time trying to find a non-marble basketweave tile pattern (aka basket-weave, aka basket weave). The basketweave pattern was popular in the era of our house, around 1900.
http://www.oldhouse.com/forum/index.php?year=2004&month=07&postid=8229
- Ann Sacks/Michael Smith collection - basketweave tiles. a crappy, uninformative website.
http://www.annsacks.com/html/california.html - showroom in california
this forum says the ann sacks tiles are $33.20/sq ft. Jeezus!
- found a marble instance at Natural Stone on trimble
- $31.70/pc, 12x12
- tumbled marble
- barefootfloor.com
- "liver shape"
received a tip that Mission Tile West may have a ceramic basketweave
- but alas, they don't
found that Artistic Tile, in San Carlos, carries a polished marble basketweave
- Artistic Tile is staffed by a bunch of slimy, used-car-wannabe sales automatons. yuck.
- Also, Artistic Tile lists the basketweave at $24/sq. ft, but it's actually $32. Bait and switch.
- The URL in their website (inadvertently) lists the manufacturer of the basketweave pattern: Chengdu Zaijian
- punt!! We're going with white hex and marble.
